ThirtyTwo and StepChild team video not for sale
Posted Friday 14th November 2008, 2:09 pm by Dunx

The rumors are true – ThirtyTwo and StepChild are combining forces for this up- and-coming season to bring you a team movie project. Last year StepChild did a 25-minute free video titled “Downloaded” which received 65,000 views in the last thirty days. Based on this distribution template and its success, both brands agree that their new movie will be a free download.

“By bringing in ThirtyTwo as a partner it will help us step up the quality of production as well as the level of riding compared to last year’s free “Downloaded” movie. We are stoked to be working with ThirtyTwo on this,” adds Sean Johnson, founder of StepChild.

“We will be providing this free movie for everyone to enjoy. We aren’t in the business of selling DVDs – we are in the business of selling quality snowboard products,” said Brian Cook, ThirtyTwo brand marketing and product manager. “Both brands believe in progressing snowboarding and having fun doing it!”

The ThirtyTwo and StepChild Teams are excited to be working on the project. This is what they had to say regarding the up and coming season.

“I’m super stoked to ride with JP this year. I’ve watched his video parts growing up and now I get to ride with him and see it in real life. Props to ThirtyTwo and StepChild!” – Simon Chamberlain

“Filming Child Support was super fun. I’m stoked to get the band back together on the riders’ side and production side. The ThirtyTwo StepChild Movie is gonna be loose!” – Joe Sexton

“This should be an amazing project to be a part of! I really like filming for team video projects and this collaboration is no exception. Joe and Simon have become good friends’ of mine and I can't wait to dive into some rail trips with them.” – JP Walker
Judging by the roster of riders and the experience of the filmers this flick is a must see for next fall! It is gonna be sick Son, Uhhhhhhhhhhh! Stay tuned to www.ThirtyTwo.com and www.Stepchildsnowboards.com for more details on picking the video’s name, team rider’s parts and their travels.

A bit like SCUK, but for skiers
Posted Monday 10th November 2008, 4:48 pm by Dunx

Here at Dark Summer, we have been looking to up our web presence for quite a while but between the magazine and the other stuff we get up to, we haven't been able to find the time. Finally, we have had a bit of spare time and so we have been working hard to get the first stage of our new website up. We hope you like it.

It is, by no means, in its final state as we see the new website as a constantly evolving thing. You, our readers, will have things you want from the site which we would never have thought of, and with the changing nature of the Internet, we know that loads of new opportunities are going to arise in the future. As such, our site will be constantly evolving too.

The new site is now much more capable at providing you with all the UK and European freeskiing news, details on all the events going on around the world, and getting you some tasty morsels of information to get your teeth into.

We will be building on this in the coming weeks and months to off you all a much more integrated UK freeskiing community. We'll let you upload you photos and videos, link to people, and also have your voices heard. We hope you like what we have so far, and we hope you will be active in the community.

Head on over to www.darksummer.co.uk to check out the new look.

IASS at Manchester last weekend. Wednesday in Aberdeen
Posted Monday 10th November 2008, 9:16 am by Dunx

Thursday saw the fourth leg of Burton’s movie tour head to Subvert in Manchester’s Chill Factor. Pirates hijack Unleash the Lens
Posted Saturday 8th November 2008, 9:34 am by Dunx

"OVERSEAS" the storming new movie from Pirate Movie Production will be joining UNLEAH THE LENS for the remainder of the tour. With epic riding from Josh Sherman, Danny Larson, Gigi Ruff, Mike Casanova, Tyler Chorlton and many more. All shot on 16mm it looks dope and the riding is amazing, what else would you expect from that list of riders!

But we are not neglecting the UK, oh no, keeping a British slant on things we bring you...

This is Britain 2 sees a crew of UK rippers hitting up dryslopes and indoor slopes the length and breadth of the UK. Without a mountain in site riders such as Jamie Nicholls, Dom Harrington, Jonny Russell and many more show you don’t need snowy peaks to throw it down.

Mountains Stories is a compilation of short snowboard films each with their own identity and character. The project was a competition where teams battled it out this season to produce the best short snowboard film.

Unleash The Lens Tour 2008 is sponsored by The Snowboard Asylum, Salomon Snowboards and Bonfire. Tour support from Skull Candy, Whitelines, Sputnik, Conspiracy, SS20 & Pirate Movie Production.

The best snowboard movie ever! (updated)
Posted Thursday 6th November 2008, 10:31 am by Stu Brass

I've snowboarded for over 18 years and certainly through my younger years I watched every Snowboard release on VHS/DVD over and over... In recent years I've seen a few videos which all have great riding in, some with big budget and some with cool innovative shots.

On Friday night I went to the premiere of the much anticipated "That's it, That's all" and right from the off it blew my socks off!! The film has some of the best riders in the world (Nicolas Muller, Terje Hakonsen, Mark Landvik, Jeremy Jones, Pat Moore, Scotty Lago, Kyle Clancy, Bryan Iguchi, Jake Blauvelt, Danny Kass and more) headed up by arguably the best rider of today... Travis Rice. Now whilst I love watching great snowboarding and being blown away by some of the latest tricks, this film goes soo much further in presenting snowboarding in a whole new light... felt like I was watching a mix of Lord of the Rings meets Snowboarding. I can't fully remember but there seems to be only a handful of action shots actually filmed from the ground, otherwise its all filmed from multiple helicopters and it looks unreal with some amazing post production.

I realise writing this that I'm finding it hard to put the words down that I felt watching this film, it made the hairs on my neck rise and I left wanting to watch it all again. I'm pretty sure that this film has set a bench mark, which will not be reached again for 5 years.. it's that good... That's it, That's all... watch it

Press Release October:

The Season’s Most Anticipated Snowboard Film. Pro Snowboarder Travis Rice Pioneers New Tricks and Technology In "That's It, That's All."

“That’s It. That’s All,” the ground-breaking snowboard film produced by Brain Farm is "epic snowboarding meets Planet Earth,” explains Curt Morgan, President of Brain Farm. “The film is a visually stimulating piece of work that pulls in a wider audience by encompassing the most progressive riding in the world with unbelievable travel and nature footage.”

In an attempt to push the progression of action sports films, “That’s It, That’s All.” raises the bar on both the level of athleticism and quality of production. For two years, producers Rice and Morgan traveled the world in search of conditions that capture the essence of snowboarding. This quest took the riders to New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Canada, Valdez, AK, and Jackson Hole, WY. Using the features found in these locations, Rice began inventing new tricks including the first landing of a double backside rodeo 1080 (spinning three times, while going through 2 inversions).

“We put everything we humanly could into the production of this film,” said Travis Rice, pro Snowboarder and Co-Owner of Brain Farm. “Quiksilver and Red Bull stepped up to help us match top caliber riding with the highest possible production quality. Our hope is to showcase snowboarding in a whole new light.”

“That’s It, That’s All.” comes to DVD, Blu-ray™ with an iTunes release in October. To purchase “That’s It, That’s All.” check out www.ThatsIt-ThatsAll.com or stop by your local snowboard shop this fall. For exclusive teaser and ‘Behind the Scenes’ webisodes, go to ESPN.com/Tita

Also, we'll have more on the Snowfix World Tour really soon, we're about to go film a special episode where we'll tell you exactly where to be and when to come party with us this winter so keep your eyes out, pack your board bags and make your way to the mountains coz that's where the future's at.

Fear of the Park is resurrected!
Posted Friday 31st October 2008, 11:11 am by Dunx

You may be looking at this and thinking; “What the hell is going on?” Well Fear of The Park is back in action and ready for the fight. We have some explaining to do…

Three weeks ago, the UK’s favourite freestyle website went down the pan. With diminishing moral and loads of work, we were finding it hard to maintain the site and, to be honest, considering the time and cost and effort it took to keep the site running we decided it wasn’t worth it. And so that was that. FoTP was no more.

But, we didn’t say we were gone forever.

What closing the site allowed us to do is take a breather and take a look at exactly what we wanted to do and offer to the UK scene.

Within a couple of days, we found a new operating system that did exactly what we wanted and more, just without 5 different logins and several uploads a day.

FoTP is now more focussed, offers the latest technology, but still has all the great UK freestyle orientated content. Oh, and it looks a little different too.

We thought that there is no point trying to copy sites like Snowboard Club or Facebook, they already do their job very well. Instead FoTP now has a different approach.

With the technology that now runs the site, we can offer an up-to-date news service, RSS feeds, an automated calendar, image galleries, movies and polls, all wrapped up in clean and clear website – expect a lot from this new FoTP, as this is here to stay!

If it’s UK freestyle – FoTP is the place to be. So go and check out the site – let us know what you think and get involved. That’s what it’s all about.

Funny how these things work out sometimes. Viva la shred and we’ll see you on the hill!!

No Dark Summer for 2008/09
Posted Tuesday 14th October 2008, 1:29 pm by Dunx

Whilst we appreciate that the majority of SCUK readers aren't freeskiers, we do know that some are. We're also big fans of Dark Summer, so thought we'd post this up.

It is with regret that we have to announce that, due to some recent last-minute issues with our bank, Dark Summer will not be producing any issues in the 2008/09 season. Unfortunately, in this current financial climate it has made it tricky for small independent companies like us.

While we are sure that rumours will quickly spread that Dark Summer has finished forever, that is not the case at all. We are simply taking a break for a year and will be back and bigger than ever in October 2009.

Not being the kind of people who like to sit around twiddling their thumbs, you can rest assured that we will not be silent for the next 12 months. We not only have some great plans for the 2009/10 issues of Dark Summer that we want to put into play, but we also have some long-standing plans for our website that we will finally have the chance to make real.

We have long since felt that UK freeskiing needs a community, an independent voice to help it progress and Dark Summer still intends to fill that role.

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has help us through this year, and all those who have given us their support through this difficult decision.

As always, Dark Summer is a magazine for the UKs freeskiers and we always want your input. If you have ideas, comments, questions, or you’re just sat at home bored, then drop us a line or swing by the website. Keep your eyes on the site for the changes you will start to see appearing in the coming month.

And most importantly, have a good, snowy season wherever you end up.

The movie features action footage from Shaun White, Terje Haakonsen, Natasza Zurek, Gigi Rüf, JP Solberg, Heikki Sorsa, Nicolas Müller, Tadashi Fuse, Frederik Kalbermatten, Jeremy Jones, Jussi Oksanen, DCP, Mads Jonsson, Trevor Andrew, Keegan Valaika, Kevin Pearce, Danny Davis, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Mikkel Bang, Mikey Rencz, Peetu Piiroinen and the Smalls Team, Burton’s crew of riders that range from six to 14 years old.

Fear of The Park... R.I.P.
Posted Friday 10th October 2008, 9:47 am by Dunx

As you may already be aware if you read the news on www.fearofthepark.co.uk, Webbo and Branny have decided to close the FOTP website down.

There are many reasons behind this decision, the main reason being that it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue to run and maintain the site with limited finances, little support and limited time, day to day.

There's not much more to say apart from a BIG THANK YOU to all those who have contributed to the site, got involved and have helped to get FoTP to the size and status you see today.

I sympathise with the guys. I was running TheBoarder.co.uk on my own between 1997 and 2004 and it was being funded through my IT consultancy. Although breaking even on cost, it wasn't actually paying me anything for the many, many hours taken to keep the site running, post daily news, run the Summer Bash every year or cover other events. There's only so long you can do these things as a labour of love, when there's little support and in some cases downright hostility, from the organisations you're aiming to help!

On the flip side, Webbo is super-keen to become more involved with SCUK, so as SCUK's functionality is enhanced over the coming months, we aim to put his enthusiasm and talents to good use.

Snowfix is back!!!
Posted Thursday 9th October 2008, 11:29 am by Dunx

Winter has officially started with the return of the world's siiiiiiiiiiiickest snow podcast... This is our first episode and we hate to brag, but it is better than anything you've ever seen before in your life ever. If you're into the creme de la creme of skiing and snowboarding, that is. Tim and I kicked off the season in Zurich at Freestyle.ch where we stalked the pros and managed to interview Mr. Colby James West and Sir Jon Olsson, who are only amongst the best freeskiers in the world.

We've also got tons of riding footage from the event, mad tricks, massive airs, a good old slam section and a bit where I get the riders to write on me. I love my job... We're also able to make our public announcement at last, we've had to keep it secret for so long it started driving me crazy: Tim, Charlie, Mattia and I, the whole Snowfix crew, are off on a big tour of the world in December and January where we'll be hitting US, Canadian and Euro resorts for 4 weeks!!! We'll be shredding, heliskiing, skidooing but most importantly partying in every resort we end up in, and we'd love to meet as many of you as possible! In fact, we launched a comp whereby you girls and boys can help us have an even better time, so go watch the show to find out what we need from you and what you can get from us! And keep checking our website for updates on dates and locations. We hope you like.
